India’s status as a top global travel destination has propelled its tourism and hospitality sector into a pivotal driver of growth within the country’s services industry. The potential of the Indian tourism sector is immense, as it ranks as a vital source of foreign exchange. Foreign exchange earnings displayed consistent growth from 2016 to 2019, boasting a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7%. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), India is ranked 10th among 185 countries in terms of travel & tourism’s total contribution to GDP in 2019. During 2019, the contribution of travel & tourism to GDP was 6.8% of the total economy, INR 1,368,100 crore (US$ 194.30 billion). In 2020, the Indian tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, which was 8% of the total employment in the country. In 2021, the travel & tourism industry’s contribution to the GDP was US$ 178 billion; this is expected to reach US$ 512 billion by 2028. In India, the industry’s direct contribution to the GDP is expected to record an annual growth rate of 7-9% between 2019 and 2030. In 2020, the travel & tourism industry’s contribution to the GDP was US$ 121.9 billion. In 2022, the contribution of the travel and tourism industry to India’s economy stood at US$ 15.7 trillion.[1]
